The Pet Portrait Artist
"We have an artist here!" the first grade teacher exclaimed to the teacher's aide after looking over the six-year-old's shoulder. Jo was working on her very first pet portrait--a brown crayon drawing of a horse on a piece of school-issued Manila paper. The skinny dark-haired first grader had just devised a budding art form that would become her special hallmark a half-century later. No one could have known then how intertwined her life would become with the two elements she had just spliced together--art and animals.

Tips for Taking Better Pet Photos
If possible, use natural lighting by photographing the pet outdoors. Position yourself so that the sun is behind or to your side.
Get down on the pet's level.
Get close to your pet. Remember that detail counts.
For multi-pet portraits, get all pets looking at the same thing. A helper may be necessary. If you can't manage all pets in the same photo, take them individually in the same location with the pets' eyes focusing on the same spot. Jo can arrange them into one portrait.
Good poses don't last, so be ready. Take more than one photo.
